Personal Project

Designed and 3D printed a lampshade for my parents

Background

Many years ago, my friend Kevin was juggling a soccer ball in our living room when one of his touches went astray and he broke a lamp. Since the company that sold the lamp went out of business, I decided to 3D print my parents a new lampshade.

Process

Took measurements of the lamp base to ensure the lamp would fit properly

Made multiple prototypes for the base of the lamp until I found a perfect fit

Printed multiple prototypes to experiment with material, color, and shape

Outcomes/Learnings:

  • Made a functional lamp that provides much needed lighting to the room

  • Printing slowly helps a lot with print quality (this lamp took over 60 hours to print!)

  • Using a translucent material means you will be able to see layer lines much more easily

  • AI is great at tweaking print settings to ensure a good looking final product
